Improve exception handling (#3290)
* fix: except only non-system-exiting exceptions

* chore: add myself to CONTRIBUTORS file

* refactor: explicitly specify possible exceptions

If an exception is not an Exception, there are only three options left.

* refactor: use BaseException for fallback
